GE Energy to Provide GIS Consulting and Services to Cedar Rapids, IOWA Water Utility

May 06, 2005

ATLANTA, GEORGIA, May 6, 2005: -- GE Energy's geospatial data management group has reached an agreement with the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa to help the city's water department develop an enterprise geographic information system (GIS).

Based in Kansas City, Mo., GE Energy's geospatial data management group provides GIS implementation services and photogrammetric mapping to private sector civil and environmental engineering firms, utilities, pipeline operators, and civil government.

For the Cedar Rapids contract, GE Energy is providing professional GIS analysis and recommendations, as well as mentoring, to implement a limited pilot data migration project to translate existing MicroStation® data to a modified ESRI® water data model.

The GIS analysis will include a needs assessment based on evaluation of current business processes; GIS functional requirements, hardware and software configurations; staffing issues; and the city's GIS integration vision, relative to trends in geospatial data management technology.

The data migration pilot program will define data-source documents, assess existing and target data models, outline cartographic and geodatabase expectations, and prepare an action list for pilot data migration.

"This project is a prime example of our data migration experience working with a variety of legacy databases and GIS software platforms," said Ron Domsch, general manager of GE Energy's geospatial data management group. "Each client's needs are unique, and our broad expertise helps us implement data conversion solutions that make sense, both functionally and economically."

GE Energy will critique the performance of the pilot project as part of an executive presentation of GIS implementation recommendations.

The Cedar Rapids Water Department serves a population of 125,000 and maintains more than 44,000 customer accounts.
