Vikram Rai remembers well the days when air travel was rare in India. He didn’t fly outside his native India until he was 25. His father’s first time abroad came when he was 48, and his grandfather never left the country. “We had no opportunity to buy a plane ticket back then,” Rai recalls. “There wasn’t much international business in India, and the infrastructure just wasn’t there for affordable air travel.” In the years since, Rai has been instrumental in helping India take to the skies.

Indira Gandhi International Airport, in Delhi, can claim a host of superlatives: It’s the busiest in India, with some 37 million passengers passing through last year, and in March it became the second busiest in the world — after Atlanta’s airport — in terms of airliner seat capacity. Now it can boast another. The airport is the first in India to operate entirely on power generated by a combination of sun and water. It’s also the first of its size in the world to run completely on renewables.

When she was a little girl growing up in India, Dhanalakshmi Nagaraju wanted to know how things work. “I was always fascinated by cars and machines and by the science behind them,” she says. “I wanted to learn more.” Nagaraju went on to study engineering, and last year she landed a job as a manufacturing process engineer at a new Wipro GE factory making some of the latest medical imaging equipment. “It was a greenfield project, and there were a lot of things we had to learn quickly,” she says. “We had to build the plant, set up new production lines and hire and train workers.
