Over the next 60 seconds, GE’s energy technology, from gas and wind turbines to hydroelectric, will generate enough electricity to supply millions of households for an hour. In that same time, around 30 aircraft equipped with jet engine technology made by GE or one of its partners will take to the skies — one every two seconds.
Dayna Johnson had one of those a-ha career moments while visiting GE Gas Power’s Advanced Manufacturing Works, a state-of-the-art facility for new-make process and repair development in Greenville, South Carolina, this spring. Hung on a wall was an oversize poster of Thomas Edison, emblazoned with a few of his very wise words.
On the western tip of Singapore, there’s a sprawling facility that began life in the 1970s as a shipyard for tugboats and drill ships exploring the turquoise deeps of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. But the site’s days as a local repair shop are no longer. GE’s Global Repair Solutions Singapore (GRSS) is now a global hub for fixing the key components in the world’s fastest-growing fleet of H-class heavy-duty gas turbines.

The hills and valleys of eastern Ohio are no strangers to energy revolutions. Some 200 years ago, settlers in what is now the town of Caldwell drilled the first working oil well in the United States. Earlier this month, a new power plant located an hour away in the village of Hannibal, on the Ohio River, produced electricity with a fuel mix containing hydrogen.
Uniper, one of the world’s largest energy producers, announced in 2020 it planned to become carbon neutral by 2035. The company has already cooperated with GE Gas Power to improve the efficiency of its Enfield power plant, north of London. Now the two companies will be working together to help lower carbon emissions at Uniper’s newest combined-cycle power plant in the U.K.
In the 1970s, a team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology traveled to Japan to figure out why that country’s automakers were delivering cars faster than their competitors in Detroit. Their search led them to Toyota and its Toyota Production System — a set of management principles focused on boosting safety, quality and efficiency, reducing waste and creating more value with fewer resources.
