Chasing the Contrails: GE Aerospace Teams Up with NASA and Boeing to Take a Closer Look at Emissions

Chris Norris
November 06, 2023

The scene about 36,000 feet in the air somewhere north of Seattle has shades of a techno-thriller: Two jets are loaded with an international team of experts from GE Aerospace, NASA, Boeing, German Aerospace Center (DLR), and elsewhere. A NASA DC-8, bristling with probes and sensors, pursues Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator Explorer, a 737-10 destined for United Airlines whose CFM LEAP-1B engines are operating with HEFA sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

July 25, 2023

This week at the Oshkosh air show in Wisconsin, the world’s largest air show, GE Aerospace debuted its new livery design for the aircraft test bed for NASA’s Electrified Powertrain Flight Demonstration (EPFD) project, a landmark effort to help prove the feasibility of hybrid electric flight for commercial aviation.

For the hybrid electric test flights, GE Aerospace is partnering with Boeing and its subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences using a modified Saab 340B aircraft powered by GE’s CT7 engines.

Electric cars have become common, but building a commercial electric plane is a different story. Just ask Mohamed Ali, vice president for engineering at GE Aerospace. “Electric motors behave very differently at altitudes above 10,000 feet,” he says. “They are susceptible to plasma arcing, for example, and much more difficult to manage.”

Flying Into The Future: Christine Andrews Is Helping NASA And GE Aviation Build A Hybrid Electric Engine

Amy Merrick
April 13, 2022

One summer as a teenager, Christine Andrews visited NASA Mission Control Center in Houston with her family. Marveling at the spacecraft on display, she contemplated the thrill of contributing to space discovery. It wasn’t a stretch. She was already participating in high school symposiums for women in math and science. Yet the idea was daunting. “You look at all the buttons in the capsules and think, Who knows what all of these do, let alone how they all work beneath that?” she recalls.

In the 1940s, it took a Qantas flight more than four days and seven stops to fly from Australia to London. In 2018, a Qantas Boeing 787 Dreamliner named Emily, powered by a pair of GE jet engines, covered the 14,498 kilometers that separate the port city of Perth and London in 17 hours and 20 minutes, setting a record for a scheduled flight by the airline.
