In 1900, GE humbly opened the first industrial research & development laboratory in the United States, in a barn in the backyard of the home of scientist Charles Steinmetz. Today, our global headquarters is a world-class, multi-disciplinary technology center spread over 525 acres overlooking the majestic Mohawk River in upstate New York. With more than 1,900 people at our Niskayuna campus, virtually every scientific and technical discipline is represented. We are chemists, physicists, electrical and electronics engineers, microbiologists, metallurgists, information technologists and everything in between. People of different disciplines work on teams together to develop technologies in areas like electronic systems, alternative energies, biosciences, nanotechnology and polymer materials. We're in the final stages of a $100 million renovation that has added a new building wing to house our emerging nanotechnology and biosciences programs as well as state-of-the-art wet labs. We also have modernized our conference facilities, making the Niskayuna campus truly a place where GE's businesses and customers can come together with Global Research technologists to discuss technology and drive the next innovation breakthroughs. |
